Play a word game vs a bot
Last updated: 2026-07-26
Sometimes you want an opponent without the schedule, the lobby, or the signal that usually comes attached to one. Challenge-a-bot in Hot & Cold gives you exactly that: a single challenge-style round against a friendly computer opponent that lives entirely on your phone. You both chase the same secret word, each guess is ranked by how close it is in meaning to the answer, and no connection is involved at any point. It's a genuine single-player word game against the computer, and it happens to work on a plane, on the subway, or anywhere else with no internet at all.
One important thing up front: challenge-a-bot lives in the iOS & Android app, not on the web. The bot is generated and scored on your device, so the mode is hidden in the browser. If you're reading this on a phone, grab the app below and the button drops you straight into a bot round.
Get the app on the App Store or on Google Play.
A friendly opponent, not a stopwatch
The bot isn't built to flatten you. It's built to keep you company, and it plays the round the way a thoughtful human might: trying a word, reading the heat, then steering its next guess toward warmer ground. You watch its progress alongside your own without ever seeing what word it typed, so nothing gets spoiled. No clock ticks you into a panic and no leaderboard breathes down your neck. It's two players poking at the same puzzle from different angles. When someone lands on rank #1, the round is done, and you get a tidy breakdown of how the two of you did. Think of it as a sparring partner for your vocabulary rather than something you have to defeat.
How the round works offline
Because the app bundles the whole word list, everything a round needs is already on the device. A secret is chosen locally, and every guess is scored against 14,828 words ranked by closeness in meaning. Rank #1 is the secret, and lower numbers are hotter. Those ranks come from precomputed 1,024-dimension embeddings, so the scoring is identical to every other mode and completely deterministic: the same guess always lands at the same rank. Follow the heat ladder as you go. Most of the list sits at 🥶 freezing, then it climbs through cool and warm to 🌶️ hot near the top, and roughly the closest 6 words come back 🌋 blazing just before you hit 🎯 the secret. A solved round is graded out of 1,000 points. Your opening 4 tries cost you nothing, after which a gentle penalty curve sets in, and you can switch on up to 3 hints if you'd like a nudge. The full rules live on how to play if you want the details.
When there's no signal
Challenge-a-bot is the offline half of Hot & Cold. If playing with no connection appeals to you, the endless word game also runs fully offline on mobile: unlimited rounds with a fresh secret each time, and no bot required. And when you do have signal and want real people instead of a computer, the async word game with friends lets a whole room take on the same secret on everyone's own schedule. For a quick match with zero setup and zero bars of service, though, a bot round is still the fastest way in.
